Aarhus, Denmark

Aarhus is the second-largest city in Denmark and it isn’t even close — the capital Copenhagen has well over double the population. But this somewhat smaller city has a charm and laid-back vibe that more than makes up for it. A surprising amount of the city still has its traditional Danish buildings, and there’s even been architectural discoveries that now date its founding back to the year 770. But just as much around here is modern and vibrant, including a culture of fine dining where chefs regularly pick up top international awards, and the street food scene is just as delicious. Outside of the built world, the city is surrounded by forests… and Denmark’s nearby Lake District isn’t just iconic, but it’s actually where the queen of Denmark has her summer home.
