Most call it the Bay of Plenty. We call it the Bay of Plenty of water fun. And Tauranga is right at the heart. It’s the chief city in the region and means ‘sheltered waters’. More like ‘awesome waters’ with all the waterskiing, windsurfing and rafting you’ll be doing. When we said pack your energy, we meant it. Especially for Tauranga.
The Bay of Plenty where Tauranga is situated was named by Captain Cook after the Maori villages of the region replenished his supplies. How generous. And Tauranga has really found its stride in the last twenty years or so. It probably has something to do with the fancy schmancy, revamped waterfront. Think Riviera style. But with a little more oomph.
