Once the home of convicts and settlers, it’s now home to some rather ghostly characters. Wooooo. Port Arthur was established as a convict settlement in the 19th century and soon became home to the hardest British and Irish criminals. It’s these same criminals (in see-through form) that have been spotted haunting the town. So is it silly ghost stories, or convicts with some unfinished business?
It’s Port Arthur’s history and spooky stories that have made it Tasmania’s number one tourist destination. And it sure is a fascinating history. Port Arthur’s tough security measures have become the stuff of legend. The only escape route from the prison was guarded by soldiers, mantraps and half-starved dogs. Then escapees had to brave the shark-infested waters. That didn’t stop inmates from trying though.
So get yourself down to Port Arthur and who knows, maybe you’ll have an encounter of the sixth-sense kind.
