The catch is that “twenty minutes” covers everything from a flat waterfront stroll to a drive out to private farmland, so the trick to a good Wellington cruise<\/a> day isn’t seeing everything; it’s picking the right two or three things for the time you’ve got ashore.<\/p>\n

Where your ship actually docks<\/h2>\n

Carnival ships often berth at CentrePort, on Aotea Quay, a couple of kilometres north of downtown Wellington. Weta Workshop is the one major Wellington attraction you shouldn’t plan on reaching on foot. The workshop and Weta Cave sit on the Miramar Peninsula, about twenty minutes’ drive from the city centre and considerably further from the cruise terminal, so a self-guided taxi run eats a meaningful chunk of an eight-hour port day. A guided tour through the Weta Cave takes you into the working studio spaces behind The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit and a long list of other film and TV productions, with genuine props, creature moulds and miniatures on display and a look at techniques still used on current projects.<\/p>\n

Wildlife and nature: Zealandia and Seal Coast Safari<\/h2>\n

Wellington’s two standout nature experiences sit at opposite ends of “how far are you willing to go.” Zealandia is the easier one, the world’s first fully fenced ecosanctuary, home to k\u0101k\u0101, tuatara and the once-thought-extinct takah\u0113, and only about ten minutes’ drive from the city, with a free shuttle running from the top of the historic cable car for guests who’d rather not book transport.<\/p>\n

Seal Coast Safari goes further, literally. The current owner runs the tour personally, walking guests through a private on-site museum of artefacts found on the property, including a small collection of vintage motorcycles, alongside the working farm and its wild birdlife reserve.<\/p>\n

Cuba Street, Wellington’s pedestrianised heart, is where most of the good coffee and casual food is concentrated.
