Montevideo, Uruguay

If you still remember the name "Montevideo" from a geography test, just wait until you see the real thing. Unforgettable is what we're getting at, from the city's cosmopolitan vibe to the history that's on display, from the steakhouses serving locally-raised beef to the miles of beaches. Speaking of which, don't miss Punta del Este — 150,000 visitors a year take this advice, and South America's most famous seaside resort simply rewards every one of them. Montevideo's museums are eager to show off the culture, with one dedicated to sculptures and paintings, including some Dalis, plus another museum that's actually dedicated to fútbol. Colonia Del Sacramento, on the other hand, is a Uruguayan town that could very well be a museum, featuring so much history that it was named a World Heritage Site. Montevideo's Palacio Salvo could once claim to be the tallest building in all of South America, but standing 26 stories tall, it's now content to be a landmark. And, you know, you can't leave without catching a little tango. Bar Facal, one of the oldest in the city, features a tango performance every day at noon.
