Lace up your walking shoes and get to know Lerwick, the capital of Shetland. You’ll meet your guide at the pier and begin your walking tour, walking past Market Cross and seeing the Lerwick Tollbooth, the headquarters for Lerwick’s lifeboat station. Continue along cobbled Commercial Street to the Town Hall to experience all its beauty. Built in 1862, the Town Hall features a series of stained glass windows that illustrate Shetland’s history. In the center of town is Fort Charlotte, built in 1665 by order of Charles II, this fort has been a customs house, a town jail and a courthouse. The tour ends back at the pier, but afterward you are free to enjoy the town on your own. Shop for souvenirs or Shetland’s famous woolen clothing or visit the Shetland Museum. Explore the museum which boasts an impressive collection of archives spanning 5,000 years. You can even pop into a Trowie Knowe — a chambered home of Shetland’s mischievous fairy folk — before returning to the ship at your leisure.
