Royal Palace: Discover the Royal Palace, constructed in 1866 as the residence of the Royal Family and venue for court ceremonies, featuring striking yellow-and-white pavilions, the Silver Pagoda in the southern compound, and known as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, with its silver-tiled floor and collection of 1,650 gold, silver, and bronze artifacts set with precious stones.
Independence Monument: Snap photos at the Independence Monument, built in 1958 to commemorate Cambodia’s independence from France.
Wat Phnom: Continue to Wat Phnom, Phnom Penh’s namesake temple, built in 1372 and rising 87 feet above the city.
Tuol Sleng Museum: Tour Tuol Sleng Museum, a former high school transformed into a Khmer Rouge prison and torture centre. See the preserved cells, chambers, and fenced buildings while hearing the story of the estimated 17,000 prisoners and the many who were later killed at Choeung Ek. If available, you may have a chance to take photos with a surviving prisoner before returning to Sihanoukville and your ship.
Requirements & Restrictions: The museum is not appropriate for children; parental discretion is strongly advised. Shoulders and legs must be covered when visiting the Royal Palace.
What to Bring: Wear comfortable walking shoes, clothing suited to the weather conditions, a hat, jacket, sunscreen, insect repellent, and bring bottled water.
Good to Know: Travel time to Phnom Penh is approximately 2.5 hours each way. The Royal Palace may close without notice for official events. If so, a visit to the National Museum or the Killing Fields will be substituted.
